One of the most famous persons involved in this was John Brown. In a letter to his son the day after he met Tubman, John describes her as the most of a man, naturally, that I have ever met with. John Brown truly believes that Harriet Tubman has the mentality of a man at that time because shers strong, independent, and a reliable soldier. Just as he admires Tubman, Harriet has respect for Brown as well. Because of this, it makes her even more determined to go after her goals of freeing slaves without giving up. This quote perfectly describes Harrietrs intentions to be similar to that of John Brown, who ended up dying when he didnt get liberty for blacks. Although he did not have any face-to-face contact with Tubman, Nat Turner was an abolitionist who encouraged Harriet into her aspiration for freedom. One of the most popular black uprisings of the century was Nat Turnerrs revolt of 1831, where him and his crew killed over sixty whites less than a hundred miles from where Tubmanrs home was at the time. Although this event was seen as terrifying for the whites, it was exhilarating for the black community, from which young Tubman was a part of. Nat Turner must have been a big influencer for Harrietrs bold personality that led her to become a national hero. Regardless of the revolt being a massacre, Turner had obvious beliefs, one of which included that blacks should not be treated as property. Harriet Tubmanrs revolt to make her belief come true was to free slaves. During her constant trips, the slaves who accompanied her were obviously scared. To calm them down, Tubman sang verses to them such as Hail, oh hail ye happy spirits, Death no more shall make you fear. These words would not only flow beautifully within the fugitives but also in Tubman herself. The goal of her music was to keep her people strong, so when they were ready to keep moving, Harriet could not give up on her already lifted up followers. Whether she realized it or not, the song meant for the fugitives was also a glimpse of hope for herself. Harriet Tubman believed that she could foretell the future, which was a great asset in her determination. She claims that when she came to the North for the first time, one of the visions she had when she was younger replayed itself in real life exactly the way she remembered. That is why she constantly rescued slaves from the South without a second thought. She believed that any dream she could possibly have would become true. She was so assured of this because her father also had similar powers, given that he somehow predicted the outcome of the Mexican war. Knowing the amount of faith in God that she had, she still could not have stayed on track if it was not for the help of friends and white co-workers. Passes were given to her by people who worked with her during the Civil War, allowing her ease of transportation, entrance to a building, or just to grab whiskey. If a white man did all the work Harriet achieved, it would have been easier to free slaves by simply crossing them over, only having to hide the slaves and not himself. That was not the case, so Tubman, as a spy for the Civil War, used these passes to do what she was appointed to do plus help lead rescue missions to free slaves deep into the occupied South Carolina. Some might argue that because Harriet Tubman was very determined, her actions showed to be too extreme at times. One of her most famous quotes Dead niggers tell no tales depicts how Harriet would often threaten slaves into not giving up, because if they did, she would kill them. In contrast, this did show how smart she was, because even if she let one person go back to the South alive, the chance of Harrietrs plan coming out to the public would have always been a possibility. Harriet Tubman was a woman that made history by freeing countless of slaves without feeling content with freedom just for herself. Her fearless and intrepid personality is an abstract subject that has many reasons behind how it was formed and kept steady throughout her trips. What made her so special is that she kept putting herself in danger for an estimated amount of 19 times, even though Tubman herself never kept track of the number of her trips. Almost any book or article about Harriet Tubman will say that it is unknown how Harriet built up the courage to go back to the South, but they do not realize that the answer lays in the events of her life, beliefs, and people she encountered rather than just on hard facts that most historians rely on. When transition questions are discussed in regard to SAT Writing/ACT English, they tend to be covered in two main forms.   The first  way involves a transition placed after a comma in the middle of a sentence.   Version #1:  The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs in 1519 brought the fragrant vanilla flower—and its companion, cacao—to Europe.  Vanilla was cultivated in botanical gardens in France and England,  but  growers were unable to collect its glorious  seeds.    Here, the transition  but is placed halfway through a  sentence and used to connect the two halves of that sentence.   The second way involves transitions between sentences (or occasionally two parts of a sentence separated by a semicolon). Version #2: The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs in 1519 brought the fragrant vanilla flower—and its companion, cacao—to Europe. Vanilla was cultivated in botanical gardens in France and England. However,  (or: England; however,)  growers were unable to collect its glorious seeds. In the sentence above, the transition however is used at the beginning of a sentence to  indicate the contrasting relationship between that sentence and the previous sentence.   So far  pretty straightforward, right?   There is, however,  another way in which the second version of the  sentence can be written.   Version #3:  The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs in 1519 brought the fragrant vanilla flower—and its companion, cacao—to Europe. Vanilla was cultivated in botanical gardens in France and England. Growers were unable, however,  to collect its glorious seeds. Although this version of the  sentence places the transition halfway through the last sentence, it is actually  identical in meaning to  version #2. The  transition has simply been moved from the beginning of the sentence to the middle. Its purpose is still  to convey the relationship between the last sentence and the previous sentence; it does  not  connect the two halves of the sentence in which it appears. When  many  test-takers see this type of question, however,  they do not realize that they need to look back at the previous sentence to determine the relationship. As a result, they either plug in each answer choice  into the sentence and then become confused when they are  unable to determine the answer or, worse, sit and stare at the question.   So how do you tell when an underlined transition in the middle of a sentence is being used to connect two halves of a sentence, or to connect one sentence to the previous sentence?   The  shortcut is to look at the commas around the transition.   Transitions that come after a  single comma are connecting two halves of a sentence.   In contrast, transitions that are surround by  two commas one before, one after are connecting a sentence to the previous sentence.   And if  youd like the technical explanation, here goes: Transitions that follow a comma only  are called  coordinating conjunctions, also known as  FANBOYS conjunctions (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So). These conjunctions serve to join two  independent clauses (complete sentences) into a compound sentence, as in version #1 above. In formal English, these conjunctions should not be used to begin a sentence that is, they should not follow a period or semicolon. Transitions used to begin sentences  are known as  conjunctive adverbs. Common examples include  however,  therefore,  furthermore, indeed,  and  similarly. The purpose of these transitions is to indicate the relationship between one sentence and the previous sentence. Usually, these transitions appear at the beginning of a sentence or clause that is, after a period or semicolon.  Sometimes, however, writers move them to the middle of a sentence for the sake of stylistic variety, as in version #3.  In such  cases, these transitions are  used  non-essentially that is, they are placed in between two commas. To reiterate: only the placement of the transition changes, not the purpose. To determine whether the transition is correct, you must look back at the  previous sentence and determine its relationship (continue, contrast, cause-and-effect) with the sentence in which the underlined transition appears.   Now lets look at a test-style example: Despite their iconic look and their important role in Dutch history, wooden clogs are now mostly made for tourists  rather than for  everyday wear. The 300,000 pair of shoes made every year  are, however, sold  mostly to foreign buyers. A)  NO CHANGE B)  ironically   C)  in  fact   D)  meanwhile The fact that the underlined transition is surrounded by commas indicates that it is necessary to look at the previous sentence to determine the relationship.   What does the previous sentence tell us? That clogs are mostly made for tourists.   What does the sentence in which the transition appears indicates? That most of the clogs made each year are sold to foreign buyers (i.e. tourists).   Are those similar ideas or different ideas? Similar.   So the correct transition must convey a similar relationship. The only option that fits is C),  in fact, because that phrase is used to emphasize a preceding statement.

Found in Unlikely Circumstances About a year ago, myself and a couple friends took a semester off school, went to South Africa for a vacation and for a chance to see a different part of the world. We set out for four months; three of those months we spent traveling up and down the garden route and the east coast and midway through our trip, we stopped at a hostel called, â€Å"Coffee Shack. † It was very laid back and relaxing hostel; there were many people there every night and the ocean was so close to the tepee we were living in, we were practically swimming. Every morning we would wake up to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore and the enormous African sun that hovered over our heads. One morning, we decided to go out with some of the guests from the hostel for a hike along the hills by the seashore. With the sun beating down on us we felt trapped because we couldn’t swim in the water, the waves were too strong we’d be thrown up against the rocks. We carried on through this frying pan for another couple of minutes until our leader stopped the group. He lead us to this crack in the wall on the side of the cliff which was about six feet tall and about a foot or so wide; barely big enough for someone to squeeze through. We all stood there, as warm as ever, wondering what he had brought us too. He then told us we could go inside in groups of four; lucky for us, my friends and I were in the first group. We felt like eggs being boiled on concrete before squeezing through the crack in the wall and going into the cave; shaded from the sun. The four of us stood there; it was absolutely pitch black; we couldn’t see a thing, but as pointless as it seemed, it felt great to get out of the sun even for a couple of seconds. Our leader came in and explained to us that every night, when the tide comes in, this cave gets mostly filled up with water and when the tide goes down it leaves some behind that serves like a pool. He handed my friend a flashlight and he turned it on. The complete darkness we were looking into immediately vanished and a small little body of water appeared. We all looked at each other; I could tell by the expression on my friend, Jake’s face that he was thanking the heavens. We then, one by one, crammed into this Jacuzzi sized pool and let out sighs of relief. The cooling sensation was indescribable. Introduction The Holy Scriptures are without question a vault of rich wisdom for a variety of subjects. The subject of leadership is no different; in fact a case can perhaps be made that the Holy Scriptures are word pictures of God’s leadership for humankind. Whether it is read as the divinely, inspired word of God, or as a mere historical account of ancient Israel, or as a book of pure myths, the reader will encounter fascinating people with extraordinary leadership qualities. The following will take a glimpse at Moses; the man whom God chose to be the leader of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt, into a land that flowed with milk and honey. The following will be an attempt to document moments of strength, weakness, failure, and victory. This paper will conclude by identifying Moses as a servant leader who, in spite of human failure, ultimately fulfilled the will and purpose of God. Leadership Style The style of leadership that Moses demonstrated was clearly Servant leadership, â€Å"In order to retain the potential in this young man, God led him into the Midian desert to learn a new way of life† (Kuest, 2009). As a shepherd he learned to serve, and became servant to the purpose and will of God. Relationships Moses although he spent much time on Mount Sinai (in relationship with God), he also spent time with his successor Joshua whom he had prepared for Servant Leadership (Num. 11:28). Incarnation Moses was not a detached leader. In fact throughout the wilderness journey, he was among the people. He was an accessible leader. Evidence of this fact is found when there were needs the people went straight to him (Num. 20:1-13). Covenants OLD TESTAMENT LEADERSHIP 3 Moses was perhaps known for many things; in fact it is widely known that Moses is regarded as one of the Jewish people’s greatest prophets/leaders. One specific thing that Moses is known for is the Mosaic Covenant. The bible states â€Å"If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priest and a holy nation† (Ex. 19:5-6). Moses In spite of his greatness, Moses was a man with weaknesses. As the time when he was supposed to speak to the rock but instead hit the rock, thus failed to do what he was instructed to do. Moses over saw victories, and uprisings by his own people, however, through it all he was the man whom God had called and he was servant to that calling. Conclusion Perhaps his greatest strength was his relationship with God, the time that he spent in the presence of the Almighty God had to be his constant reminder that what he was doing was greater than himself.
